I have a 40w UV i just hooked up to my 150g tank to help with Dinos. Currently only running 180gph through it.

My question. I want to dose live phyto to help with adding diversity and feeding pods. Is there a flow rate that will kill dinos but leave phyto alone?

Or should I just take the UV off?

You might find a bit more info here

Im not an expert in the field but i do run a big one. Not knowing what model you have and the dwell time, or type of UV bulb, diameter of the pvc sleeve, ect... it will be hard for someone to tell you the exact flow rate that might make a difference if there is one.
Im going with what ever will sterilize the dino's will also sterilize the phyto. Pods will eat the phyto live or not.

Hey shallow. I have had amphidinium starting about a year ago. Since then, I’ve read just about every thread out there and battled dinos myself. I’ve found there is a large correlation between using UV and dino control for many types except amphidinium. I am not convinced there is a correlation with adding phyto or pods, at least as a short term strategy.

Interesting. I have amphidinium and am wondering if I wasted the money on the UV...

I have read a few thinks where adding live phyto from Algeabarn (Marinemajik) will help out compete the dinos. Not sure. I ordered some and than started thinking well dang my new UV is just going to kill it all...

I have the 40w Emperor Aquatics UV.

Yes, if you have amphidinium, UV won’t help. I still run my UV because we often have mutiple species.

If I were you, I would:
1. Remove any nutrient removing things like carbon dosing, nopox, siporax, blocks or bricks, chaeto fuge, etc. I would do weekly wc, and keep your alk/ ca maintenance method.
2. Run GAC to remove dino toxins.
3. Dose nitrates to about 10 ppm and phosphates to about 0.1 ppm to encourage other algae growth. Don’t worry too much about the numbers, but make sure you have measurable quantities.
4. Add biodiversity with piece of liverock or rubble.
5. Dose silicates to encourage diatoms.
6. Manage algae with physical removal and cuc. Add more cuc when the tank gets really ugly.
7. Once cuc is established, stop dosing and allow nutrients to come back to a natural level. This will be months down the road.
8. Consider removing sand if all else fails. Some amphidinium reefers believe this helps most.
