I had an outbreak due to stress related to an alk overdose/ph swing a couple of months ago and lost almost my entire stock of fish. I am slowly recovering
.
I have been looking around at different UVs because I need to replace one for my display. Right now I am running an Aqua UV 25 watt on my 180 BUT it is the UV I bought and use for my pond. All in all I think this is what turned my tank around and should have put it on much sooner. But atleast I have three survivors as a result of thinking "better late then never"
Anyway in the next week or so I need to take it off and put it back on my pond and need to find a replacement. Right now I do not want to risk going without one on my display.
Can anyone shed some light on the wattage per gph thing.
For instance, the two UV's I am currently looking at is another aqua UV 25 watt and a coralife turbo twist 6x UV. The aqua UV 25 watt states for saltwater use it is for 150 gallon water volume where as it is like 4,000 gallons fresh water BUT I understand that is info based on using it as a sterlizer vs clarifier.
Then for the coralife turbo twist it just says up to 250 gallons. Does not specify between salt or fresh clarifier vs sterilizer.
So what I don't understand is how can the coralife be rated for a higher tank volume but lower watts??
I think I am pushing the limits with the aqua UV at the moment but I also think it has certainly helped....how much better could it have helped if rated for more....I have no idea.
Then I also have a hard time figuring out on something like the coralife 6x what size pump/ flow rate, I would need to help keep the parasites under control.
The site says 200-400 gph total but does not break it down again clarifier vs sterlizer. I obviously want to use it as a sterilizer.
Where as the aqua uv states for what i want to use it for, to use about 400gph.....or so I think I understood it to say that. So right now I am using a mag3.
I guess the slower the better when it comes to killing off harmful bacteria/parasites but I don't want it too slow either I would not think.
Any help in the subject would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe the 25 watt aqua UV would be sufficient even though it states 150 gallons if I slow my rate down a little more?
So before I buy one or the other I wanted to ask. Also was not sure if anyone had any experience with the coralife turbo twist 6x and if so what size tank do you have it running on and what size pump.
Thanks in advance!
