Hello,

I have set up a new marine aquarium, and I am experiencing a bacterial bloom which I am given to understand is a normal occurence in a new tank. The water has been cloudy about a week now and no signs of dissipating. (I don't use any carbonator)

I am doing regular water changes, I have positioned the flows to disturb the water surface for oxidation and I am limiting the light, but it is not having much affect.

So I have heard of UV sterilisers which can resolve the cloudy water bacterial bloom issue quickly.

A few questions please:

1. Can anyone suggest one under 40USD which will work? (I am hard up for funds just now because of lockdown.)

2. Once the cloudy water is resolved, should I keep it on and if so for how long/perm?

3. Is the UV a risk to corals/inverts/pods?

4. Will this kill off beneficial algae?

Thanks

Scott

I can´t - but is it only for cloudy water - some cheap may help too.

At least for a while IMO

3. Is the UV a risk to corals/inverts/pods?

Only if they pass by the radiation chamber

4. Will this kill off beneficial algae?

Only if they pass by the radiation chamber

Hi Lasse,

Thanks for the reply. I have had a look on Amazon and Ebay and it looks like these are designed to fit inside sumps, which I do not have. There are also terrible buyer reviews stating that all of their fish had died within hours of placing a UV Steriliser in the tank.

Is it possible to use one of these within the main tank area before adding fish just during the cycling phase?

Thanks

Scott
