My tank is 2 months, and 16 days. Have few corals nothing crazy. Its 200G. And i was wondering if i should leave my UV 12 hours at night? Would it hurt anything? I want to hesr your opinion about it

What is your main goal adding the UV to your tank?

What issues are you trying to combat? :)

Following this as I have a new 220 gal with same question. How many watts is your UV?
55watts running at 520 gph. Im just wondering like because doing my research everybody is stating different opinion about it. Some people say it kills all the coral food, and it also kills the maturity of a new tank, some people say it helps with the ugly stage, i dont know anymore. Its conflicting topic

Let's see what the experts say. I would say use it only when you see a issue starting otherwise maybe a couple hours a day if at all???

Im just trying to have it for algae prevention, like algae, etc… more like prevention more than anything else.
Your tank is brand new, you WILL go through some sort of ugly stage whether you like it or not! :) There's no avoiding that with or without a UV steriliser..

It's about patience at this stage of your reefing experience- not about gear!

Have a look at this! :-)

In my experience it doesn't do anything for algae unless you're talking about phytoplankton blooms.

If you have the sterilizer, I would just run it at night to be a safeguard against bacterial blooms. That is also when ich "hatches" from my understanding.

I already read that, and I understand it doesnt eliminate the ugly stage, my question was if i run it 12 hours at night would it hurt anything? Like the good stuff in the water?

I run it 12 hours at night. But i was wonderin gif it affects the maturity of the tank? Or delay things? Or kill the good stuff for my corals

No. I run mine continually. 39w @ 500 l/h on a 135 gallon system. I use mine for parasite control.

Day vs. night changes nothing.

Eh. It may remove bacteria from the water column that could compete with algae on rocks, but other than that I wouldn't worry.

Because doing my research and theres crazy conflicting answers out there. Some say it kills the good sponges around the tank, some say it delays the maturity of the new tank, some say it kills the plankton the water creates

If you're in doubt, don't use it.

If you don't have a problem - don't try to fix it.

Simple! :)

I kinda have to disagree. I started with a 40 gal got a ton of live rock and Australian live rock with tons of coralline on it and had a instant cycle and over a year now tank is very healthy growing corals and 6 fish. But every scenario is different just because I was successful doesn't mean others may be.

Luckily we don't need to agree- that's the beauty of it isn't it? :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I assume that both of us are basing our opinions on anecdotal experience and as such, we will have different answers. I have set up new tanks both with and without UV- using both dead and live rock. I haven't seen any noticeable with regards to UV use.

We can only advice based on what has worked for us- unless we go about it in a scientific way. :p
