I just recently purchased a pentair 40w uv sterilizer for my newly set up, bare bottom 220g mixed reef.
As for manufacturer recommendations a pump with 1000 gph. The unit itself is aprox. 48" tall, i plan on running it vertically next to my display.
So i would have 4' of height, 4' of vinyl tubing from my skimmer section to the unit and another 5' of tubing to the return section of the sump. I do have a dct6000 jebao pump thats rated at 1585gph at 12.5ft. I'm guessing this would be sufficent? If not, im looking for recommendations. I would just buy a flow sensor for the apex, but all the bad reviews on them. I dont know which is worse guessing on flow or trusting a sensor with bad reviews of inaccurate flow and low life expectancy.

Welcome to R2R. I have the same UV and I run a DC pump. This way I can easily control the speed. But my pump is mostly limited by the pipe diameter and how much my tank can handle in the overflow. So I don’t run the UV at it’s maximum capacity but it keeps troublesome algae under control.

Here is a handy calculator to measure headloss.

Careful though, the input required is gallons per MINUTE not per hour.

I would suggest a controllable DC pump so that you can control the contact time easier. Different critters require different levels of contact time.

Azmsgt. What pump do you use And how do you have it plummed? I was just going to run it from the skimmer section into the return section with 1" vinyl tube. I didnt even think about it messing with the overflows.
