I have a 500Litre FOWLR tank and have just put a UV on it ( tank is approx 1 year old ) but I've noticed that the tank is now so clean from Algae that i'm concerned that its going to stave the snails that are in it. I know the UV will only be affecting the free floating stage of algae but I've noticed that it's also stopping/slowing the growth on the rocks so much that the snails and fish are cleaning it up. ( I'm assuming it's because it's stopping the free floating stage so restricting the growth of it.) What do people do that Run UV's with Snails in the Clean up crew? I got a large enough UV so that i can tune it for Algae control or parasite control. Is it just a case of tuning it more towards the parasite control side? ( e.g slowing the flow down) or run it on a timer so it's not on 24/7?

Any Advice is welcome.

I think it might be coincidence that your rock growth is also stopping. I run UV on every tank and I have never really had it make a huge difference in algae growth. What are your phosphate and nitrate levels? I am guessing if you increase those, algae will grow, UV or not.

Thanks for the replies, yep i'm thinking it's because i have really low Phosphate and Nitrate levels. I Test with an API ( yep I know not the most accurate test kit around )

Phosphate >.25 ( Lowest measurable level on the test kit )
Nitrate >5.0ppm

So yep I need to start overfeeding and getting more fish in there ( currently there is only 14 in the tank )
