Hey there,

Im about to build my first reef tank ever (red sea 250) and already considering to implement a uv sterilizer sooner or later (probably after cycle and the first life added to the tank).
I have two setups in my head. Variant 1 would be a bypass from the returnpump, variant 2 would be a "bridge" from one sump into the return pool.
From what I've read, variant 1 should be the preferred solution. I dont have to buy a separate pump (but probably a more potent returnpump) and its a vertical mount.
The valves alone are probably more expensive than the small pump needed for variant 2 though.

Anyhow, Im not sure if I'm correct or should consider otherwise. What do you guys think?
What I do know is, that Im really not into having a pump directly in my displaytank and plumbing from there to the sump.

I do option 2 as my tank was already plumbed when I installed the UV. I'm not real keen on using my return as a manifold. To many variables to keep a constant flow at a certain speed through the UV using a manifold.

Nothing wrong with using a manifold, just my personal preference.

As you already noted, the price of a stronger return, and the plumbing will be way more then just buying a separate pump. The manifold will be a cleaner install though. Up to you, either way will work.
