UV Sterilizer - the best thing ever?

+1 best thing ever. I won’t run a tank without one (once established); who knows how many algae blooms & bouts with dinos it has saved me from but I bet it’s more than 1. Just the time saved in glass cleaning is worth it.

If your reef tank has bright enough light and nutrients which I hope all of them do than yes your tanks is making a byproduct of phytoplankton. Don't believe everything that the "big wigs" spoon feed you. This is my opinion of course and can be taken with a grain of salt if you like. Lol.

I'll follow the science from experts in the field over your opinion. Sorry but you are on a wrong path but good luck in your endeavors.

It’s not necessary to dose phyto for pods- They eat detritus and other things. I don’t dose phyto and have plenty of pods. Also phyto does turn your water green… you purposefully tint the water with phyto (RG complete) when raising clown fish to keep them from being scared of light. Pretty sure there is some science to back my claims.

Depends on what type of copepods some require live phytoplankton to live as that's all they eat . Also many people get copepods and amhipods confused on which type of pod they acutaly have . If your water is turning green then you are either adding way to much phyto or you have a major imbalance in your reef system. Live phyto doesn't last long in any reef system as it doesn't have the means to grow and filtration pulls it out rather quickly . When reef system's turn green like OP has stated 9 times out of 10 it's synechococcus ( aka green cyano bacteria) and has nothing to do with phytoplankton at all . Can't speak on the clown fish breeding as I don't have any experience in that . I know RG Complete isn't a live form of phytoplankton so I'm assuming that's why they would use it to help with light penetration. There's also some other ingredients in it that may help keep the cells suspended in the water colum .

I agree with this and was thinking about saying something very similar earlier but really didn't feel like starting a back and forth debate over something like this...even in my free time...not over a topic like dosing phytoplankton

I went on vacation, my siphon broke for my overflow so had a fellow reefer put a band aid on it. He put the heater in the main DT and disconnected refugium until I got back.

there was about 75 lb of rock in the refugium that became disconnected from the DT water, and probably 20 gallon of water. I believe this was what caused my green water - my tank uses close to 200 lb rock as filtration, and it lowered to about 125 lb of rock ( what is in DT )

I came home and moved everything from the 75g to my new90g, put all the rock back in the refugium and hooked it up. A full $3 pillow from wal mart’s worth of mechanical filtration and the UV cleared up my swamp water.

I plan on continuing my regimen- capful of phyto and zoo once a week. Running UV for 12 hr a day, just because the crystal clearwater is exciting and it adds a significant amount of flow to DT.

the phyto was most likely not the cause of the outbreak. However I can not confirm that. I believe the over feeding and removal of filter rock to be the cause.

i also apologize for starting an argument. It’s only fun when I plan on starting an argument...
