Have you tried to syphoning it out? I had the worst case of cyno so I decided to syphon it out everyday for a week and it never came back. I know it's a lot of water change I have 220g set up and if I remember I think I did a 50/75 litres water change a day. But it was worth it. If you decide to go this route then remember to turn your power heads off first.

I don't like chems either, but I could not take it anymore and used chemclean . It was gone in three days and never came back.I. did not have any side affects, except skimmer going crazy afterwards for a few days.

I don't have that nice of a UV sterilizer on my 255, but it will not stop Cyano. At least my 36w turbotwist will not.

If you have cyano. This is what I do.
1. Stop dosing/adding any vitamin or nutrient to the tank that you are supplementing. This does not include your minerals....calcium, magnesium, etc.
2. Increase flow and decrease phosphates.
3. Scrub cyano off everything everyday.

Recently had a pretty bad outbreak (of what I believe was the "Spirulina" variety) in my 65. Ran my two Gyres (XF-150 & 250) at full blast in fwd/reverse mode for a month - now if that's not enough flow in a 65 to slow cyano, I don't know what is - but to little effect. I did notice that there would be more of the stuff in the evening than in the morning, so shut off the light for three days.

That was three weeks ago, and knock wood - but I haven't seen the mats since.
