UV sterilizer

My Coralife Sterilizer brackets broke, so I took it as a sign to change my bulb a little early. Much to my surprise, this is what I found when I opened it up. Not only rusted inside, but water had somehow gotten into the sealed cylinder with the bulb. I bought the tank used, as was the sterilizer, so not sure if this was used error or not but wanted to spread the word. Not sure what impact of any it was having on the tank. Are there any precautions I should take?

Looks pretty nasty. I would run a poly filter to absorb any chemical or metal contaminants that might have leeched. You’re lucky the unit didn’t electrocute you - was it plugged into a GFCI? If so I’m surprised that didn’t trip.

Yikes! Was it missing an o-ring? I want to take mine apart now and double check it. I had a high tin reading on a recent triton test. Maybe that was the source....

Fortunately I never felt anything and it doesn't seem to have done much damage. No GFCI as of yet, haven't had the electrician out. I'm guessing this is why I've been struggling with certain sps.

Certainly not the news I wanted to hear! I heard there was an issue in the past but I thought it was resolved so I ordered one and it just got delievered!
