For algae control? Eh, yes possibly. For parasites? Don't waste your time or money

I agree they are a waste of money IMHO. Yes they kill some of the bad but they also kill some of the good... Almost everything that go's through them is killed. I'd rather keep the good and get rid of the bad via other methods.

Before I set my 40B up, I would have said no unconditionally.

But I have to run one on it (for now anyways) to keep the water from going brown. I fought the cloudy water for a couple months before I tried a UV. It cleared my water up in three days. I pulled it off a month ago, and started to see the cloudy water return. So I put one back on.

It is the first time I've ever had to run one. I'm hoping to pull it off in a month and see how the tank does, as I feel like they shouldn't be ran constantly, but only when needed.

The only time I have used a UV sterilizer was when I had a crazy algae bloom. My tank looked like a swamp, I tried everything to clear it up. The UV sterilizer did the trick.

Not wanting to hijack the thread here but had basically the same question. Thought I'd post it here rather than start another new thread on basically the same thing.

We just picked up a UV for our 125 but I'm still not convinced it should be run all the time. Our tank has been up for approx. 5 months now and while I've seen a huge difference in water clarity I'm concerned with the short amount of time our tank has been up that we may be killing off too much of what we actually need? Any thoughts?

The tank had been set up previously in someone else's home and we set it in ours using some of the live rock from the original setup and all of the sand.
