I don't have a sand bed and will never have fish that rely on them but I feel like a hefty pod population is essential to a thriving sytem. Just wondering what everyone thought.

The larger pods might actually survive going through an 18w sterilizer, depending on your flow rate. I wouldn't worry about it. I have a 115-watt UV sterilizer and there's a million pods in my tank.
