Simply put... no. There are lots of opinions on the value of a UV, but I don't think you'll find many who think it is required. My personal opinion is that they can help with water clarity, keep down algae blooms, and eliminate viral pathogens. That's about all though.

I wouldn't say its a must to run on a reef tank, or any tank for that matter. But, and a big BUT... it's nice to have in case you need it.
I purchased one 7-8 months back to deal with a dino's, and left it running for 5 months after. Although it took care of my dinos in about 7-10 days I left it online. But took it offline at the end of the 2019 as I didn't feel I needed to run it any more.

Nowadays most people use UV light to sterilize bad/little good bacteria in their DT just in case they don't have quarantine system for coral and fish or to overcome unknown mistakes. You can lose all fish just because you received gift coral from friend or you bought infected fish from lfs.
However, UV is a must in quarantine system for sure.

I don't think it's a must have, but there are some issues (like certain strains of dinos) that it will help you with. I currently have one, but plan on taking it offline in another month.
Some people would not start a tank without one, others wait until an issue comes up and then get one, some never have an issue they think requires one, the rest think there is absolutely no proof they even work. That's kinda the beauty of reefing, many ways to do it...
