Vacation Disaster...Need to Vent

I'm away with my family in Orlando...went to Discovery Cove yesterday(if you haven't been, you need to go--1,000,000 gallon lagoon with over 1000 fish, over 100 different species). Had a great time with kids snorkeling etc. That came to a crashing halt last night as my tank sitter goes to my house last night to check on things and finds all fish(except. Clowns) dead. I "had" a 10" Mertensii nem that decides to move and must have gone into a Vortech and got shredded releasing nemocysts killing all fish...I'm absolutely sick to my stomach and won't know the true damage until I get home Sunday...I pray that I don't have a complete crash...why is it that stuff like this seems to happen while on vacation? End rant...thanks for listening!
Just broke my marine heart and will pray for you. That’s AWFUL and am so sorry

Best of luck..keep us posted. That’s so sad

Those are called Anemone Guard and was featured on one of the Reefbuilders showcase article. The gent 3D prints them and is from the UK. His contact is only via Facebook. I bought two guards for MP10W, they run 25 GBP each and 15 GBP for shipping so roughly after USD conversion, CC transaction fee, $90 shipped to CT.
They are bulky but I assume for a reason so that there is a void between the wetside and the guard. So for my MP10W with the guard on, it looks like the size of an MP40W wetside for reference.

I'm glad everything else looks good and is pulling through? What's that gorgonion? It must be a hardy variety. I was under the impression that they are one of the most sensitive corals

I've got a 3D printer. I never thought about making guards for powerheads, but I'll see if I can come up with a design (I'm not really good at designing, I mainly alter other design files on Thingiverse) . It looks like it would be about 40 cents of plastic or possibly less.

Sorry this happened to your tank and for the losses. Try to enjoy the rest of your time at Disney.

Looks like a nice design. I wish I had one of those powerheads so I could test some prototypes.

I've got a few cheap photosynthetic gorgs...the really large one I picked up at Petco(crazy I know)a few years ago and it was about 6" and was $10. It's grown like crazy and been fragged a few times. Find a photosynthetic gorgonian from the Caribbean and good parameters keep them growing. If you're close(I'm in Louisiana),I'd be happy to send you a piece.

Sorry for your losses. Crazy how this stuff seems to happen when the tank is unattended for a while.

That gorgonian, is it a Candelabra?

Those that were interested in the MP-40 Nem Guard, I did find another 3D printed one on eBay that is made in the USA. $22

I'm thinking about making a generic sized ones for small/medium/large heads. I'm just trying to figure out how I want them to mount.

This is the BIG downside to this hobby. No matter how many precautions we take. Thinking about not joining family on vacation this year as last year skimmer stopped working. Fish feeder had no idea why every time he came over another fish was dead. So sorry this happened to you.

I hope you're kidding... If you let your hobby rule your family life, then it's no longer a hobby. Just my opinion.

You don't need to be on vacation to have a disaster. I had a chiller thermostat malfunction. One night it kicked on and never kicked off. In the morning I stepped into a huge puddle on the tile floor in front of the 120g tank that was condensation dripping off the glass of the tank. Both tanks (120g reef and 50g anemone cube) were below 60F and by noon 98% of my sps corals (70% of the tanks) were white skeletons. I lost over 20 fish. I'm still in the hobby and I still love it, but I seriously downsized from 4 tanks (120g DT, 65g 4'x2'x14" shallow reef, 50g cube for anemones and 25g frag tank) to just the 50g cube and a non-permanent 5g frag tank.

Sorry for your loss, I hope you recover OK.

Just got a phone call from my buddy who ran to my house...looks like all tangs(clown, Kole, orange shoulder, and scopus), royal gramma, 2 azure damsels, lyretail hawk are all gone. Mertensii must have been pretty much liquified...thank God all corals and other nems seem fine. Silver lining I guess.

So is your mertens gone now? Nothing to pull out? :(

Beautiful tank, look at it as another opportunity to get some other things you like in the future. Your tank looks aged/healthy otherwise, I would think it would recover pretty fast.

Agree, when I had to move a few years ago I set up a small tank for my precious donisreef picasso's and their magnifica I had for 5 and a half years.
I literally set a holding tank 2 feet away from my bed so I could watch them the night before the big move, fell asleep staring at them.

When I cracked my eyes open in the morning it looked like milk.
My eggcrate barrier somehow failed, mag went into pump, everything gone just like that, absolute heart break.

Sometimes no matter what we do, we just can't always control what happens.
