What do you do when you come home to a flooded house, a tank full of air, and a stench that causes your next 3 divorces? Learn! Pinpoint what caused this catastrophe and don't let it happen again, if you still even have it in you after the devastation.

Better yet: use preventative measures!

One thing I always had a problem with was my protein skimmer. It would always flood when I went out for more than a day...if I stayed home it worked fine! Hmmm. Well I don't want to risk having a low o2 reading on behalf of my fish, but I can deal with some extra algae if I have to.

To Counter the flood risk I decided that I did not want it to suck in any air. I opened the valve to the outlet so the water was nowhere near flood zone.

In the reaction chamber i inserted a regular air stone and an air pump so that I had a good amount of gas exchange and a place where bubbles can splash without making a mess.

It doesn't filter at all, but the water is not lacking the oxygen it would if I turned it off completely. Sometimes these are sacrifices you have to make when you have your mom house sitting for you, not to mention the bloated cats whom she over feeds every time because they meow.

I use a 55g sump at 50% full when off. On vacation I fill it to 90% so there is less chance of running the pump dry, but still not enough to flood during power outs.

This weekend is a short one. We will be back on Sunday so I will leave the lights off to simulate A storm while I am gone. I also have the powerheads temporarily pointing straight at a few corals that may grow algae on them if something were to go wrong. Mainly the sea whip.
I also did a mass feeding to hold them off. I know my mom has big eyes and I don't have the scrubber hooked up for a failsafe haha.

If we do have a power outage I have battery powered air pumps and tons of batteries.

So what kind of things are you doing to prevent issues while away?

I personally set up a webcam and monitor via a controller.

Ah, yes. I have been wanting to do this for all my tanks and sump. That way I can watch it flood from anywhere in the world!

I take it you have a person who will be there to rescue your tank when needed?

Float switch smoat schwitch. What is safety!? Lol. That's a great idea aside from the fact that the Coralife has a mind of its own. If only there was a way to put a float switch inside of he skimmer itself.

Where there's a will, there's a way... Drill the skimmer cup and put an acrylic rod down the neck of the cup. Place a float switch at the end and adjust to the level where you want to kill the skimmer. If it starts to overflow it will shut it down. However, be sure to use some sort of locking relay with reset switch or it will just sit and power cycle your skimmer pump...

My vacation planning involves a controller for monitoring with email alerts, auto top off, auto dosing with reef club friends to verify it is all well and good through the vacation. They are also great backups in case an emergency occurs. So when it comes to vacation planning, your best asset is your local reef club.

Local reef club for me is a 20 minute drive lol. I have my mom :)
I am looking into controllers still but I keep buying corals bwaaahahahahahahaha
I will eventually have one. I have a guy who I observe his tank via Neptune and its so convenient!

Oh yeah and buying a new suit for the wedding Im attending knocked my butt down a bit. $650 isn't a lot for a suit, but it sure seems like it since most of my other suits are from sears or I have the classiest thrift shop suits on the planet that average $5-$10 per entire suit! I can't pass up a ridiculous houndstooth to save my life. They are for parties where I won't be afraid to get up and run out into the woods dressed to kill.

So, I float switch inside of a superskimmer would be a fun project. If I do decide that is what I'm doing then I am throwing a 2nd pump on it to make it a recirc. (My favorite type)
