Shallow sandbeds ( 2-3 inches ) in all 3 of my tanks, vacuum the sandbeds with each weekly water change. Been doing it this way for 20+ years, and have been having great luck with it --- was a hold over from my freshwater days. Even to this day I am shocked at the amount of stuff that is pulled out -- wouldn't want that staying in the tanks.
I vacuum my sand bed but it's fairly shallow 3 to 4 inches depends where in the tank. I notice if I didn't vacuum I start getting gunk and algae build up
I vacuum mine every water change. I use the reefflakes so it make it easy to vaccum. I love the prestine white sand look so I vacuum. You'll be amazed what you'll siphon out
It really depends on what kind of sand bed you have. In general, shallow sand beds do well if you vacuum them. Deeper sand beds ...maybe not so much. If you want to utilize sand beds then it's probably worth your while to check this guy out. Way too many snails, stars, worms, pods etc. I don't mess with the sand bed but was very conscious of dead current spots when aquascaping. I often move power heads to randomize flow, helps with detritus.
I have a 3" sand bed, and I use it as part of the biotome. It s a habitat for rotifers, pods, worms, bacteria, etc., etc., etc. It acts both as an area to grow food and as a biofilter. Vacuuming it would disrupt these purposes. My sandbed used to be coal black in color, but it is now multicolored from coralline. I think it looks better .
