Hey all! I recently acquired a beautiful little valentini puffer. He’s eaten like a pick since two hours after acclimation, and he doesn’t look skinny by any means. The thing is he seems very skiddish and spends a decent amount of the day hiding. Perched in hiding places in the same way he does while sleeping. His only tank mates are my two clowns and some hermits. The clowns were curious about him at first, but even while “investigating” him kept their distance. Since then they’ve just left him alone and done their thing.

My question is simply, based on the above description should I be concerned about my little puffer? I’ve only had him for a few days so I want to think he’s just getting used to his new home. But I figured I’d ask just to make sure, ya know?

Yeah, give it some time and it will get used to your tank. Also, I heard this puffer may eat corals if you have them.

Mine was a little skittish for a few weeks, but once he settled in he became the most outgoing fish in the tank.
That’s what I’m hoping. He was the most aggressive feeder at my LFS. And the most brightly colored of all the Valentinis they had. I just love this little dude and want him to thrive

I’ve been told it’s mostly sps they tend to nibble. I don’t have any corals as of yet (still piecing together everything I need for my DT). But I’m planning on having a mixed lps and softies. So fingers crossed it’ll work out. He’s even been leaving my hermit alone after a few curiousity pecks lol

Clowns can be quite nasty to new introductions if they are mature, if they are still young they normally don't bother, so it could be that but puffers don't normally hide much after a week or so. I wouldn't worry as it sounds like it's still settling in and if it's feeder that 90% of the battle.

yeah my clowns are still very small. the female is maybe two inches long, where as my valentini is 3 inches. and i've only had him for 3 days so i'm going to chock it up to he's settling in. heck, i'm away from the tank and i see him cruising around picking at leftover food right now. thanks everyone! i think all (knocks on wood) is well
