Every now and then I observe something that I don't have a ready answer for. This reef tank is 7 moths young, and was established with Florida live rock, and, after a few months, Valonia (bubble algae) began to appear. I tried the usual remedies such as Emerald crabs, Fox Face, etc. to no avail. Several months ago, I dosed Vibrant once, and green microalgae disappeared after two weeks but there was no apparent effect on the Valonia.
I increased light intensity slowly from 100 micromol/m2/sec to 200 on the sand bed (max. of about 500 on the most exposed rock) and I estimate that better than 95% of the Valonia has disappeared. The lighting change is the only one made recently. I'm not claiming it's the reason for the Valonia disappearance as there quite possibly some dynamics present that I haven't/can't test for.
Has anyone seen Valonia disappear in response to lighting changes?

Though I am not as specific with lighting changes as you, recently I haven’t had any bubble algae, but have lowered my lighting a little, only a few percent in the past few weeks and today I noticed some bubble algae starting to form as well. Interesting.

no changes in nutrient levels ? This is very interesting indeed , I have seen it in very high par though 300 and higher and thriving , its always been a puzzling macro to me with alot of non answered questions. Either way glad yours is going bye bye . 2020 the year of the REEF !!!

Would the same thing have happened if you hadn’t previously dosed Vibrant?

Wish I knew. The Vibrant was dosed once (14 mL in 140 gallons) on October 11th with 30 gallons changed since. The slight coating of green algae on the glass was gone by October 18 with Valonia apparently unaffected. Just before Christmas I was looking for tubing to pluck and siphon the bubbles out. Now it's almost completely gone.
