I am building a DIY skimmer for my new 71 gallon reef tank from the posting 'Do It Yourself (DIY)' started by Chris kindley, Feb 29, 2016. I really liked it, my one is slightly bigger, I am using a 4" tube and it is slightly longer.
For the outlet I want to use a right angle valve, however all the ones I can find on the net are expensive, over $100.00. If you look around there are a number of skimmers that use them.

Here is a pic of one

US Plastics have them, they are called NIBCO® Chemtrol® PVC Angle Globe Valve, but for a 1" valve, which is what I need it is USD 146.23, surely there is a cheaper option CAN ANY ONE HELP
I live in New Zealand and we have quite limited PVC fittings over here, including PVC valves etc, the reducer for the top of the skimmer I am having to get from the US!!

By the way here is a pic of my skimmer so far sitting on my SketchUp designed stand

You could just use standard gate valve on your outlet with a "tee" glued on top of that; imagine the first pic of gate valve with the knob on the right side outlet of "tee". There's nothing wrong with the knob being perpendicular to the ground rather than parallel.

Thanks yes I have seen that I just liked the neatness of the right angle valve, why a "tee" sorry for asking such an obvious question.
So as I understand the standard gate valve sits on the angle that is already on outlet then the tee sits on the top of the valve so the outlet is at right angles to the skimmer and then the other part of the tee is vertical??

Super crude quick paint sketch, but worth 1,000 words ;)

The side outlet of "tee" becomes outlet of skimmer. Top of "tee" can be left as is, or capped with a hole drilled in it.
