First time drilling so a little nervous and want to triple check everything. I'm in the final stages setting up my new 40b. I'm ordering an Eshopps Eclipse M overflow and want to get the correct size glass drill bit for my return line. I Have a Varios 2 for my return pump. Should My return line be 1/2, 3/4, or 1in? Ive been trying to read a bunch but its a little overwhelming trying to sift through the hundreds of tank setups (most of which are completely different sizes then mine). I want to start dabbling in SPS so good flow ( i'm assuming around 4-600 gph) should be possible. Side note: what are the drawbacks of just having the return line go over the top of the tank and skip the drilling and finality of it all. Thank you !!!

The only drawback of having the return go over the back would be esthetically it would not be as appealing. Most returns are 3/4 inch but you will need to use a bulkhead and that hole would be larger. Somewhere about a 1 1/8 diameter but this is just a guess so don't quote me! What are you going to do about your drains, will you be building an overflow box??

I would use 1" for 400-600 gph. You will be able to significantly reduce the speed of your pump.

I am getting the Eshopps Eclipse M overflow box.

anyone else with input. I dont want to put my purchase through with out having a mild conviction.

Why are you shooting for that much turnover in a 40 gallon anyways??
The average is somewhere around 4x tank volume. If flow is what you are after then use powerheads. My recommendation is 3/4 return like stated above.
Hope this helps convince ya..
