I just installed a new return pump, with now plumbing to include a manifold and flow meters. The overflow is making a whistling sound and I have no idea how to stop it! I was told on another thread that in the long run, it could damage the pump. It is also driving me nuts! Please help! Here is a picture of the new plumbing...

Do you mean a sucking sound from the overflow up in the tank? I only see one drain in the picture. Probably just durso noise. Good news is that whomever told you that could damage a pump knows not of what they speak. Probably you just have to turn the pump down.

Is there only the one drain?
Usually air noise in the overflow just means there is a lot of air water mixing in the pipe from the speed of the flow.
I’m failing to understand how noise in your drain line will affect your return pump.
Maybe I’m missing something.

Hi ca1ore, thanks for the quick response. I turned the return pump down from 50% to 15 and it is less but still whistling...should I lower it even moreWhat is durso?

Yes only 1 drain, the tank came this way. Someone else had said that on another thread. Do you know how I would lessen the air in the pipes?

You’re going to have noise issues with a single drain. You can keep turning down the pump, but you probably won’t be able to silence it and still have adequate flow.
My first tank with a sump had a single drain and it was noisy on all my pumps speed settings.

Oh no..that stinks! Before I replaced the return pump with a Cor-15, I had a Syncra Sicce 4.0 and the noise happened once and then went away. I did not have a way to control the output. Maybe its building air in the manifold that is not turned on yet? Maybe there is air trapping in the dead-end side...?

This is also possible, but you said the noise is coming from your drain line? The manifold is on the return though, isn’t it?

It seems the noise comes from the corner overflow. I am assuming since its a closed system, the plumbing noise escapes from the return. I cannot hear anything from any of the pipes under the tank..does this make sense?

Yes, and no. The return and drains are not connected. Why would they share sound waves? If that were the case you’d hear the noise from the sump, or even the tank itself before they made it into the return line and then to your ears.

You’re probably hearing the air mix with the water as it going into your drain at the overflow. The return making the noise makes zero sense.

If it were me, I’d either live with it, return to my old set up or look into a new tank with better drainage options.

Please take a picture of the top of your overflow and post it!
I apologize for the delay. I was oot and unable to take a picture but here it is. I also have set the Apex Cor-15 to 33% and the whistling happens every once in a while, nothing like before.

On a single pipe drain design a diy stockman standpipe is your best, quietest option. Sounds like, pun intended, that your old return pump wasn’t pumping enough gph to cause a noise issue, but your new pump is

I would increase the hole size at the top of the Durso and see if it helps. Can't hurt.

I will Google a diy stockman standpipe..have no idea what this is but thank you for the idea!

So the durso is that little hole on top of the drain? If so, when I cover the hole with my finger, it stops any whistling then the water level in the over flow drops fast but eventually stops and fills back up...so if I make it larger exactly what will that do?
