I noticed a few tell-tale mucus lines in my tank and saw I had a couple vermentid snails. I was planning on removing the rock that they're on (as they're the only thing on it), but I wanted to ask first: do these snails play any beneficial role in aquaria?

No not really. The amount of detritus and food they capture probably makes no significant difference. I can take them or leave them. Typically you see larger numbers of them in newer tanks and tanks that are over feed. Yes they can get out of control, but limit the available food source and the population can only get so large.

I like em. They do serve a purpose, and if they have a super large population, just break em off.
They also broadcast spawn and this is food for your corals.

Just try to break them off if they're close to a coral as they can irritate them.

I feed every other day and I have a lot of these buggers. Haven't noticed any ill effects on my coral, they are just ugly. Every few months I crush them at the base with bone cutters.
