Yep - harmless. They don't kill corals. They are just another filter feeder.

In rare cases they can irritate a coral (but highly unlikely).

Like any other living sessile thing a coral will grow around them or they will grow in a dead spot in a coral... (and then get blamed). If they grow in a branching corals lower skeleton, then sure they can create an odd branch around them or weak spot, etc.

They don't bother me in the slightest, other people panic at their sight.

These are vermetids in addition to colonial hydroids which multiply when there is food available and they love brine shrimp. Simply directing flow towards them and not at them will starve them. I simply cut them at the base of hydroids with a nail clipper and discard. For vermetids, break off at base with a pliers and also discard and rinse and dry pliers to prevent rust. For vermetid, other option is gel super glue from the dollar store- Place a dab over each tube opening and they will starve
