how would you rate this product is it good better or close to one of the best out there for a 100 gallon tank?

I dont think it lives up to the hype.

When they first came out there were a bunch of issues with the pump surging on the 170. The neck on it is very big compared to the air draw it was pulling. The 170 model pump had to be redone. Now you have to adjust the venturi by turning it in and out to get the right airdraw so the pump does not surge.

The alpha 200 is a great skimmer but is way too big for a 100g.
Take a look at the ATB 840v2 as a perfect fit. The BK mini 160, the vertex in 180, the SRO 2000 xp , or even the Avast DYI skimmer if you are on a budget. But honestly I have owned the 170 and was not pleased for what it cost. Built great. But as far as performance campared to the others on the market I think your $$ could be better spent.
