I have had my tank for about 8 months now. It is a 40 breeder from petco and a 20 long for sump with a baffle kit from ebay. I have filter socks and a small gfo/carbon filter, and a CO2 scrubber on the inlet of the vertex skimmer. I have fiddle with this skimmer for months. i have set it and left alone for days skimming realy low in the neck to avoid an overflow of the cup. I will look at it before bed and not have 1/2 an inch of dark skimmate in the cup and wake up to it blowing bubbles out of the top. I do not know what i am doing wrong i have played with multiple different sump water heights and everything. Has anyone else run into this problem or have any ideas of what i am doing wrong.

Is the skimmer in the proper water depth? If you take the CO2 scrubber off the inlet, how does it do?

After 8 mos it’s definitely time for a cleaning. Take the pump off and place it in vinegar solution, running, overnight, with airtube attached and submerged so it’s not sucking air. Next day take impeller out and clean it, the cavity in motor it sits on, and the hole on venturi that the air hose attaches to.

When you put it back together pull venturi out all the way so it sucks the most air, and adjust water level inside skimmer with skimmer water output valve

Let us know

Will the skimmer have to break in again after putting it in solution?
Not enough to notice, your just cleaning the pump and the body of the skimmer will still have the slime coat so it should be good to go. When I clean mine I usually clean the body as well, it takes a little extra time but usually starts skimming within an hour or two after a complete cleaning.
