So I recently upgraded my SCA303 skimmer to the Vertex Omega 150 because of the big black friday sale and because I wanted a better skimmer for when I start carbon dosing (via nopox). Anyway, that was back in late Nov and here we are several weeks later and this skimmer is still not really producing any skimmate. It looks like it is doing everything it is suppose to but the foam just never really forms on the top of the bubbles.

The skimmer is in almost exactly 8" of water (recommended by Vertex) and I have toyed around with the air intake setting a bit but found that it had little to no noticible effect on the skimmer. My tank is a 75 gallon DT with a 55 gallon sump (~100 gallons total) I have a moderately stocked tank ( 1 chromis, 2 clowns, 1 kole tang, 1 bi-color blenny, 1 YWG, and 1 Flasher wrasse along with several inverts and lots of coral). I would think with this much bioload that I would see at least some foam build up and skimmate collection but unless I adjust the skimmer to skim VERY wet I get nothing. I even started carbon dosing because I know that makes the skimmer work double time to try and get something and I am still getting almost nothing.

What is the deal here? Is there just nothing to skim? I do feed pretty conservatively.

I have an older model vertex skimmer. It took about 4 days of running before it began to skim.
Even when I take it out and soak it in vinegar to clean, it takes days to start skimming again.

Yea I know all about break in time and stuff. This has been running for around 2 weeks now though. Could it still be breaking in?

I have a Vertex 170 and felt the same way, and I was dosing nopox also! I really felt like the break in period was more like a month. Water depth is crucial with them, but once they get going they are great. My red dragon pump died two weeks ago, so I had to drop my old Aqua C 180 in while I'm waiting for the replacement to arrive, and I can really see how much of an upgrade it really was!
