I've been trying decide on a new protein skimmer for my 125 gallon tank for some time now and yesterday I finally ordered the Vertex Omega 180I. When I placed the order I knew that this model of protein skimmer had been out for several years but I got what I believe to be a good deal on it from BRS. I did some more research on it and from what I am seeing from several different forums is the the impeller commonly breaks on them and that it seems impossible to get a replacement. I also know that it is listed as coming with a Sicce Syncra V-180. When I google that pump model all I get is descriptions for the skimmer that list it. Did I make a mistake by purchasing this skimmer? Is there not a commonly available replacement pump for it?

Vertex is no longer in business. I have had the skimmer for a few years and have not had a problem with it. It skims great. I have been looking for a replacment impeller in the event mine breaks but can't find one.

My thoughts i dont think so, Vertex made great products, there downfall was the cerebra controller, i feel like they would still be around if they wouldn't have dropped all there money into R&D on the controller. their build quality was always top of the line, with respects they pitted themselves against some of the best for good reason, they used a very good reliable pump in the Sicce. Now is there better.. Yep! but for the price you probably paid? nope! for instance look at the bubble kings for that size.. over a grand. the ATB 840 (which is what i use and love) 640ish and some change, granted these are DC pumps and pretty efficient .. i think you made a good purchase i wouldn't second guess it. Ive had Vertex, SWCs, Bubble King, Tunze classics and now the ATB they all worked great if setup correctly. as far as a replacement impeller i believe lifereef makes a kit to convert. but the trick is to not remove the impeller from the pump, the magnets are very strong. just give it a bath in vinegar to clean it.

I only paid $300 for it. At that price as long as I get a few years out of it I'll be happy. The only other skimmer I've used was/is a Reef Octopus. But the one I currently have must have been one of the first models they made. I got it when I first got into reefing nearly 15 years ago (before taking a 10 year hiatus). Everything I've read about vertex said the quality is great. I'll keep in mind not to disassemble the pump when cleaning. I'm feeling better about my purchase now. Thanks
