I believe most Bioactivity happens when the Sun goes down. Plankton increase, Corals tend to feed Snails and other Inverts become more active. It's a whole new world when the Sun goes down. I find the same thing and I am sure most others will agree, skimmers are more active when lights are out. So if you roughly know the difference you can adjust, if not and the best thing to do is stay up and watch the skimmer, especially around when the tank is the darkest and lights have been off for 4 to 5 hours and see what it's doing. I know Vertex Skimmers should be adjusted when they are running at peak times and then YOU LEAVE THEM BE! Don't readjust because there is no foam in the cup, if you have nothing in the cup after 7 to 10 days ya maybe readjust. Do you feed a short time before lights out?
