I have an Apex and would like to calibrate my temp to +/- 0.5 degrees.

The $15 digital aquarium gauges can be as much as +/- 2.0 degrees. BooHiss

Any $15 temp gadget seems to have a huge +/- 2.0 degrees variance

What's are labgrade temp thinga-ma-bobber (dig, reddye glass) that can get very tight reading??

I found another post somewhere that said it's not in range.

I bought a cheap food digital thermometer from the food store. Calibrated it to freezing slush water and boiling water. The cheapo was remarkably accurate right out of the box.

I then used that to calibrate my Apex.

The problem was that the Apex couldn't be calibrated with ice/boiling because those values are outside its expected range.

Isn't there just some $15 glass thermometer I can buy off Amazon that can get me within 0.5 degrees?

I don't understand why a glass temp calibration tool doesn't exist...or at least well known

NIST traceable thermometers can be purchased with a guarantee of accuracy. They are just not that cheap if you want 0.5 deg accuracy.

I recently purchased this NIST traceable thermometer. The amazon product description is a little confusing but the certificate it came with has it certified at +/- 0.1C within the range we need (-10-200C or something like that), and 1.0C outside that range.

How did this work out for you and would you buy it again? I am looking to buy it also.

Before mercury was outlawed for thermometer use it did. :D

I bought one of these from BRS a couple years ago for the same reason. It was around a hundred bucks then if I remember right so the price has come down. One complaint is the cap to access the battery can be finicky. Too tight or too loose and it won't turn on. +/- .5C

Hanna has this which I got maybe 8-9 months ago. Less expensive, easy to read display which is separate from the probe making it easier to take a measurement. +/- .5F

Hanna also has one that reads temp and salinity for around the same price and accuracy.

I use the average of the Traceable and Hanna for my temp probe.

You could get a RTD (PT100) with a range of 0-100c. Resistance scales linearly with temperature. Hooked up to a multimeter will mean a consistent and accurate temperature measurement. For arguments sake why the need to go down to 0.1?

I have done this before in the past but honestly there is no benefit as opposed to the usual 1’ swing. No faster growth or anything.

it's working great. I correct my apex temp probe for drift with it every couple months as well as for homebrewing. I compare it against another certified thermometer I have and it's still on the money
