Hope that helps! I do the same thing when I have to setup a QT tank. I dont keep it running all the time - so in order to get things moving I take water from the DT and let it run.

If you are still showing ammonia on your tests then you still don't have enough beneficial bacteria to convert the NH3/4 to NO2 then NO3.

Step 1 is that I would recommend trying a product like Dr Tim's One and Only to increase the amount of beneficial bacteria level in your tank.

Step 2 is trying carbon to see what that does (if it is a bacteria bloom GAC won't touch it).

Step 3 (and most expensive) is getting an efficient UV sterilizer.

I had the same problem for quite awhile, no matter what I did it wouldn't clear. I purchased a less than $20 UV light onAmazon and the cloudy water was gone the next morning. Ran it for 5 hours the first 3 days and have gradually reduce to 2 hours over several weeks and still no cloudy water. My 2. Hope this helps.

I have found that the less chemicals you put in your tank the better it is like the less chemicals you put into your body the better it is.

Ok so an update. I've tried to remove the rock for 24 hours to no change. I did about A 40 percent water change on my 75 and put that water in the 40 that is cloudy and now it's been a few days and no change. Once I get some money I'm going to invest into a uv steralizer and hope that does the trick.

Look into the price of a UV. Might be less expensive to just purchase new rock and make new water.

Ok so an update. Went and bought the cheap green machine uv steralizer from petsmart. After less then 24 hours it started to clear up and my skimmer went nuts. On day 3 now still a little hazy but deffinantly clearing up. I don't think it's the rock because it's the exact same rock from the same batch as my 75. I started both tanks the same time and pretty much the same way just the 40 was bare bottom which I have never done before. But so far the cheapo uv steralizer is doing the trick.

Sounds like you've just had a bacteria bloom on the water column that never went away

Yea that's my thought, possibly so bad that it just kept feeding itself as bacteria died off. But idk
