the other night I was laying on the floor staring into my refugium as usual. Studying all of the micro fauna skittering about when I noticed something new.
It seems to be a very small shrimp, literally the size of the isopods.
And tonight I noticed a few more.
Distinguishing features are two black eyes close to center and they definitely have claws. At first I thought Mysid but I wasn’t able to find any pictures of mysid with claws. Some have developed a pinkish hew. Others are transparent. I do have breeding cleaner shrimp in the display but it doesn’t look similar to cleaner shrimp larval pics.

I cannot remember the name right now but it is a type of pod. I had them in my small reef for awhile.

On the tip of my tongue...... I’ve got them in my refugium now.

Stick your tongue out and take a selfie so we can see the name of these critters! :D

I agree they are probably a type of pod but I have never seen any like them in any of my tanks. Very cool!

Yes. Thanks. Now looking more at Amphipods I think it is. Another cool little critter to join the many. Always so neat to observe new things.

Harmless? How big do they get?

The ones I had never got much bigger and eventually disappeared.

I have some video somewhere I’ll try to dig up. I was afraid it was some type of mantis shrimp because of the “arms”. :D

Being that yours has bigger claws I would say you probably have a Male. He is a picture for reference

So cool! I will have to look for a female now. They seem to be substantially different.
What would the possible prey on? They have pods crawling all around them and havnt seen it make a move at any.

That’s funny. We had the same thought here to. Since the tail end is longer and the folding claws we initially thought mantis. I saw one and thought oh well let’s see what happens. But then tonight I saw more and panicked a little. Lol If it was mantis I would have been in for an interesting reefventure.

If you have the predatory ones then pods. If you aren't noticing it trying to eat any you might have a harmless grazer. There are over a 1000 species of tandid shrimp so it will be hard to get a exact species ID

No. That is quite alright. I was just looking for a general idea out of curiosity. Thank you so much.
