I have had a few instances where I would love to involve a veterinarian regarding sick fish in quarantine, but I'm yet to find one within 100 miles of me (which seems bonkers in Los Angeles). I realize that it's not practical in most cases for your $5 chromis or $30 clownfish, but I've had some really expensive fish come down with problems in quarantine that could use a professional opinion. And sometimes, I am willing to spend more than the fish is worth in attempt to save it.

Don't get me wrong, the folks on this forum have a wealth of knowledge and firsthand experience that often supersedes that of a vet, but I can't expect them to prescribe me CP, vent a swim bladder, give my fish a steroid shot, or even bust out the microscope to see what kind of worms it has.

Do you know of a Vet who handles Marine Fish in your area? Maybe we could come up with an informal directory?

Have you tried here? https://www.fishvets.org/tools/locator/locator.asp?id=30

Also, I would try googling for a Koi Veterinarian. Granted theyre not marine fish, but a vet that works on koi may also look at marine fish. Since Koi can run in the $1000s, a fish vet is probably more likely to advertise towards them.

I was just wondering earlier today if there was such a tool. It confirmed there is nobody close to me!

Googling koi vets found these:
Mobile aquatic vet (all aquatic species has the fish vet credentials) serving all of California and Nevada
https://cafishvet.com

Vet in LA that comes up with koi search, has fish in logo looks like a moorish idol (or angelfish) silhouette but not sure what they're offering
https://overlandvetclinic.com

LA based Koi only, but I would call and see if she has a referral

List goldfish and koi.. but I'd call and ask them if they see marine fish. They list their exotics as more like zoo species. They see about everything (rabbits, lions, salamanders) so might have some luck there

I really do wish more vets would treat fish. Sometimes a rx for a medication would be nice to have access to.

I know of 1 vet within a reasonable drive of me who treats fish and other exotics but they are never accepting new patients so of no use.

No other pet people keep for the most part are denied medical treatment like fish are.

I have raised Koi for more than 20 years ....Koi are the Hardiest fish you could buy ...Formalin and Prazi are the cure all ......I would make sure the Vet has some credentials in Marine before wasting a trip .I have never gone through something with Koi as Marine Fish its a whole different Universe .

I am in touch with the primary vet at the Aquarium of The Pacific. I can take my fish down there tonight, but 42 miles in rush hour is a roll of the dice. Not sure my fish will last that long in a bucket with an airstone.

I applaud your attitude, not a lot of individuals are willing to pay more than what the fish costs to have it treated. I feel that is also the reason there are not a of veterinarians sub-specializing in marine fish. Also in many states vets are not allowed to teleconference a consult or prescribe for another state, which really narrows the market they can work with. I would like to see marine vets pop up, but I can't imagine that will happen on a public level unless some regulations change to make it profitable.
