Do not use chemicals that´s not in its first breakdown step are water and oxygen ( I can still have my beloved hydrogen peroxide :))
That's an entertainingly rigid rule. I like the thought, though no idea if I would subscribe to it.
Add CO2 as an allowable breakdown product, and some people might even be able to stick to the rule.

Thanks so much for this Dan. I was one that was observing my cheato growth after stopping vibrant. I have what most consider higher nitrates 15ppm and .1 phosphates and consistent. For 5 months cheato simply would not grow nor really die. But hair algae exploded in my sump. Now at 5 month mark the cheato is growing again and hair algae still growing as well. I am really hoping that my tank is returning to some kind of normal stability (whatever that is) .

I may add that I still add trace elements, Balling elements and so on - but no chemical treatment at all in order to defeat problematic organisms (exception H2O2). CO2 is also allowed - its - among other thing - a bacteria metabolit :):):):):):)

Sincerely Lasse
