I have a 110, mostly fowlr, but some interesting hitchhikers growing out. I usually run my skimmer part time, an icecap k2-160, opposite my ATS. My tank is lightly stocked, so I don't need it for the time being (sure, I hope that changes). Plus, under normal circumstances, it seems like I get darker skimmate, and at least as much, if not more, than if it runs full time.
But bubble algae got a foot-hold in my tank and I've been trying vibrant. Along with that, I took my ATS off-line and started No-Pox. It's been 2 months, and while there are some hold-outs, most of the bubble algae is gone. I'm hoping to be done with it in another week or 2 - I have a piece of macroalgae I pulled out and won't live in a bowl much longer, plus my CUC is looking hungrily at my dog.
Last week, my skimmer really started taking off. I went from a normal quart a week to a vibrant/nopox 2-3 quarts a week to all of a sudden 1-2 quarts a day for a full week. And the first quart in the first 30 minutes after the skimmer turned on.
So I tried leaving my skimmer on full-time, but I dropped the hose back into the sump overnight, then in the morning, I put the hose back to the skimmate container. Now it is back down, too soon to tell how low, but looking like back well under a quart a day.
Water is clear, but I am seeing white film on surfaces - bacteria - that was missing last week. I feel like for some reason, the bloom was staying in the water column overnight and then getting pulled out right away when the skimmer kicked on in the morning, but now it is settling on surfaces and growing a little more. (For dissolved O2 purposes, I probably should have started running the skimmer all the time right away even if I just let it drain to the sump overnight, but again, I'm lightly stocked - so no harm done)
Don't know that I really have a question in here - just an observation.
