I would presume that some percentage of the bacteria is removed in the skimmate. Does anybody have s feeling for the answer? My skimmer runs 24 hours and collects a reasonable amount.
Also, when you use a product like Fritz turbo to seed and cycle a new tank, they recommend to leave the skimmer off for 5 days. I know that this is different thought but any relevance?

I understand what it says. My question is how this product differs from the other bacterial products that advise keeping the system offline. I understand the different applications but question how much Vibrant bacteria is reaching its target and what percentage is being removed from the system before it can attach to the algae. A fairly simple question with a complicated answer no doubt.

Bacteria attach to the algae? I don’t think you know how it works. Vibrant is a bacteria strand that will live in your system and consume the same nutrient that algae consume. Hence they will starve out the algae causing it to die.

I thought in the video that was just released by BRS that vibrant bacteria consumes the algae not the nutrients. I'll have to watch it again.

Actually @tqpolo, they do understand. This is directly from UWC, the maker of Vibrant.

Here is where it gets harder to explain, the function of one of the other bacteria is to actual go in and cling to the algae and consume them turning their waste then into biomass also which is then utilized by the corals or later removed by protein skimming or water changes. The beautiful thing is, this is not like using some crazy algaecide that just leaves a bomb of nutrients in your tank as the algae die leading you on a downward spiral of issue after issue. Once your algae issue is gone, you can stop dosing vibrant or you can simply use it as part of your routine maintenance to keep your tank looking nice and clean all the time.

So, @Back where it all began, some of the bacteria does attach to the algae and consumes it.

I can't comment on bacteria and protein skimmers.

I can comment on phyto and protein skimmers. I use to run my skimmer 24/7 and would add phyto everyday. I then noticed every time added phyto my skimmer would instantly start to pull it out and would calm back down after 30-45 minutes. I then set my skimmer to stay off 8 hours after I feed.

So if your skimmer makes extra after you add anything, its pulling it out. What I've noticed on my skimmer is extra is produced 15 minutes after lights on, 15 minutes after lights out, and after feedings. Besides that should be a predictable amount. Anytime I add something to my tank, I watch my skimmer to see if it reacts. If it does, I know its pulling it out , if it doesn't, then I leave the skimmer on. Then I take mental notes on what did what.

So if you wanted to test for yourself, next time you add, do it in the middle of the day. Then watch your skimmer. That will answer your question.

I disagree with turning off the skimmer. In fact, I always turn the skimmer up full blast where the skimmer continously overflows back into the sump (but I have an in-sump one). Running the skimmer full blast completely oxygenates the tank as the bacteria is multiplying

.

Run tank as Normal. This liquid depletes the nutrients required for Algae growth. Its not a weed killer persay.

To Jay Z, I agree with your observations with the skimmer. I have noticed this as well. The odd thing is that nothing seems to change when Vibrant is added to the tank.
To Islandlifereef, thanks for the info. Vibrant seems to work, but the mechanism of action seems to be a bit fuzzy. Perhaps it’s their wording. I guess if it works nothing more to be said.
To jgrill, that’s what I thought as well. If it was depleting nutrients then other negative effects would be noticed.
I appreciate the responses. I am on the 4th dose so I will update.

Hi guy's, I started dosing Vibrant this week I'm on my first dose, I have an issue that my skimmer is over flowing so I have to turn it off, no matter what I do it over flows. So my question is do I leave it overflowing or turn it off ? and when would you think is will stop over flowing ? I know is a question that most people wonder is as I'm dosing to clear up my tank should I continue WC schedule ?

Thanks,

Turn skimmer down slightly and leave cover off skimmer until done dosing
