If I may add, any beginner hobbyist out there - ditch the Refractometer, hydrometer idea and get yourself a digital.

When I first got into this hobby I got a hydrometer due to the book I researched said so. The constant air bubbles and inaccurate readings made me purchase a Refractometer. Few years down the road, that ended up giving me issues due to it getting thrown off calibration and then reading inaccurate each time i would check the water. So 4 years later I ended up getting myself a digital. Its easy to zero out and more accurate than anything out there. If i were to purchase the digital in the beginning, I would had saved myself some money.

By all means, feel free to jump into any of our threads and share your wisdom! We love the digital models, but also understand they may be cost-prohibitive to some hobbyists. But, like you mentioned, you could have saved some dough by going digital from the beginning. The cost of a hydrometer and a refractometer together are more than half what a digital model costs. Food for thought!

I think most starting hobbyists have never heard of a refractometer much less a digital. I use the refract. to judge how a plastic hydrometer is working and then use it for simple mixing such as 1.019 for phytoplankton water. What ever happened to the old glass floating hydrometers? I still have one floating around somewhere.
