Hey all,
Just wondering what's a good magnifying glass or monocular to get to be able to view coral in the tank up close and personal. I have tried several different magnifying glasses but they don't focus so the range at which you can see corals is real limited. I am looking for something that would be focusable from about 2 inches to 3 feet (if there is such a thing). Thanks in advance.

So No one has a recommendation? hmmmmm bummer not something I really wanted to trial and error on.

Hey Jaws have you tried a Macro lense?

Are you looking for a lens for camera or personal.
Get a set of magnifying glasses. Like Sherlock Holmes. 20x is usually the highest. I also use a jeweled loupe that comes in a set from harbor freight for five bucks. You can use those on a phone too as. A macro or close up lens
Like this.

I also have an old school grain magnifier for film. It's like a magnifying glass but is about 30x. But only really does close objects. I use that for pics too

I picked up a $2 glass that floss into a case that's mostly what I use unless I need to get really close.
You can also look into jewelers glasses. They focus more but I don't know the distances. They run $50 to $500

The porthole that you put on the tank works really really well to for about 75 bucks.
That's probably what you want for casual viewing.

So in short no. Magnifying glasses don't work like a camera lens so it doesn't zoom or focus you need to choose the tool.

Yea. I have a lot of lenses.

yeah its for personal, not for a camera (all I have is an iPhone). I use a magnifying glass (10x) but I cant look at things that are more than say 5 inches away because it gets out of focus. I like to view things at night (with atinic lights) and see all the interesting little critters that come out (pods and whatnot). I was thinking like a set of binoculars (monocular), that can focus like from 50 feet to 5000 feet only something that can focus from 1 inch to 2 or 3 feet for pleasure (and medicinal )viewing ( you know to find that little critter that irritating the base of the coral). I was looking at those jewlers loups but I too don't know what the focus range is.

The jeweled loupes are the close range.
This is why I have a few different ones.
For the really small stuff while dragging or looking for nudi eggs. I use the plastic version of the jeweler a glasses. Works great. Cheap to.
Pretty much any of those above will work.

Yes I noticed that. [emoji3] I bought it used.
It has a suction cup mount that is nice. The problem with a device like this is that it's expensive and only a small percentage of people would want it. So not a big enough market to make something. The DD unit looks like their version of a Ogle but without the suction cup mount.

The Portal is also a magnifying set that has been around for a few years. I have a few new ones available $79 plus shipping.
Half of it is in the tank, the other half has a magnifying lens on the outside and do a nice job. Have sold quite a few over the years
pm me if interesed
