Hi all! I recently set up my 125 gallon tank after a 3yr hiatus from the hobby. The tank has been cycling for 1month and 3 weeks. Everytjing has been going exactly according to plan but I hit a minor hiccup tonight.
Now that my initial cycle has run its course and the ammonia and nitrite levels are testing 0 for over 2 weeks I decided to do a 10% water change ( the first one). I pulled out my old water mixing tub which I have used a thousand times in the past. I poured a cup of distilled white vinegar in and used a scrub brush to vigorously clean the inside of the container. After cleaning I emptied out the vinegar and squirted the container out for a good 5 minutes with tap water from my hose. Next I poured in a cap of prime and a gallon of RODI water and wiped the entire tub down and emptied and dryed completely.
Now comes the issue. I filled the container with 13 gallons of RODI water and the correct amount of instant ocean salt and threw in a power head and heater. About 3 hours later I came back to text the waters SG and found an odd tan colored stringy substance floating atop the water. I will try to post a photo for you to see but does anyone know what this could be? I assume it either is some sort of bacterial growth from vinegar that was somehow missed during cleaning or something that got into the container while it sat empty in my basement over the passed few years? At any rate I'm going to chuck the whole thing and buy a new tub tomorrow but if appreciate any input if anyone has any. Thanks in advance. Greg
Ps if the picture is viewable the stuff is floating and some is attached to the cord from the power head, not the white stuff at the bottom that's unmixed salt
