Hello fellow reefers, I have a question that has been bothering me for a few days now. Since these 56 gallon column tanks are not so common, I am wondering if I can use only one viparspectra 165w led light from side to side of the tank, or if I need to have 2 of them facing front to back, spaced about 6 inches. It seems to me like one should do the trick, but I would love a little input. The tank dimensions are 30" long, 24" deep, and 18" wide. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Do you know the lens angles on the light? If its the 60 degree or 90 degree lenses you're going to want two of the fixtures to cover that 30 inches. Reason being is those lights shoot the light downward in a focused beam. so you wont get enough spread with one fixture.

I believe it has the 90 degree lenses. Could I benefit any from taking the side lenses out? If not ill just purchase a second unit.

Depending on your rock structure, if you pulled the lenses, you could possibly get by with one unit. The light fixture would have to be a little lower than the standard 12"-13" height. I'd try around 8-10" at first. Of course if you could measure Par while adjusting it's height, that would be ideal.

My last tank was a 56 collum, but I ran a T5 fixture over that one.

It'll help I'm going to see if @redfishbluefish can help at all as he is a black box light user, he might have some better info :)

This is my current structure. Its pushed toward the back more than the front

If it were me, I'd try the one fixture first. I have three modded Mars aquas over my 6' long 125. I pulled all my lenses and have excellent coverage.

I'm going to give the one unit a try. Hopefully pulling the lenses will give me enough spread with just one light. Thanks a bunch guys!

It's all about coral location. LPS and softies on the parameters, SPF in the center. I'd also leave the lenses on and mount the fixture at least 12 inches above the water. I'd only consider pulling the lenses if the fixture was in a canopy so that side projected light was reflected into the tank. But still, ideally lenses on.

So just a quick update, the 165w viparspectra has great coverage. I dont notice any beam effect at all. Everything seems happy. I'm only at 10 percent power. I want to say thank you to everyone who gave me some input. I love this site [emoji5]

just got 2 for me 90g im happy with them also seen this
"The light has RoHS and CE certisfaction at present. And we have submitted a UL certification application, believe it will be aproved soon. Any other concerns, you can also send us amazon message or send email to [email protected]. We are always happy to help. Thank you."
