I doubt it is Vivids Ultimate Rainbow Acro, but a guy came over tonight to pick up some sticks I was selling and he thought it looked like it. I actually picked up this piece from a LFS as a "comeback acro". It has been brown in my tank until recently. Starting to get some nice color on the tips. What do you think?

Thanks Steven, I have t5 lighting. 8 bulb dimmable ATI Sunpower

Growth pattern looks similar. It a very hard acro to color up for sure.

Any suggestions on what people do to get it to color up? Any additives, certain water parameters, lighting? That is, even if mine is this coral.

We talking about Ultimates Rainbow and Vivid's Rainbow Delight? Two different pieces. Hey WCR amazing pics.

You guys need to add all your good sps photos to our sps id database forum!

I'm a stickier for lineage. If you didn't buy it from Vivid (or with lineage to their colony), then it is not the Vivid's rainbow delight. It may color up to be similar, but it's not the same. However, it is the same Acro species - vaida. Is there anyway to white balance the blue out of your photo?

My thoughts exactly. I was about to type this very thing except with a quick reference link added.
Corals of the World Factsheet and images - Acropora valida

vivids rainbow is one of my favorites. sensitive but makes reefing more enjoyable when you see it coloring up. i have the ulttimates but still a booger. that colony does look very similar which may explain why the vivids is sensitive piece. agree with poidog that you can never call that a vivids or ultimates if it colors up to be the same.

Agree. If I sold frags of this piece, I would never call it by those names. I also thought is was just a tricolor valida. I can try and take a pic. with less blue. I had my WB set for when all lights were on and I'm pretty sure this was taken when only my blues and fiji purple were on.

assuming that frick is right on the species id. :)

That's my best guess. There could be about four other similar guesses. When i find the closest resemblance then the most proper name would be like this; "Acropora cf. valida".
