This developed randomly and pretty fast on my vlamingi tang. It's not progressing anymore but what is this and how do I treat?

Step up on both water quality and diet
Feed at least the following:
Spirulina brine shrimp
Mysis shrimp
LRS herbivore diet
Rods original formula
Krill
Plankton
Hikari mega veggie

Add selcon vitamins and garlic extract to the foods for stamina and immunity health

I don't see any hole in its head. Just raised bumps that developed in 2-3 days.

I don't think that is HLLE. That genus of surgeonfish almost never gets HLLE, and the raised texture and red color is more an indication of bacterial disease. If it grew slowly, there are some fish tumors look like this, but since it came on fast, I have to think bacterial. Is the lesion on both sides of the tang's head or just the left side?

HLLE is almost always bilaterally symmetrical, so that would help confirm this as a bacterial infection. I don’t suppose you can move this to a medication tank and treat with antibiotics.

I can treat the tank as it is a quarantine of sorts. What antibiotics would work best for this?

A broad spectrum, gram negative antibiotic would be most likely to work. Can you get Neoplex? If not, you could try Maracyn 2.

I can get neoplex. I currently have kanaplex. Will that work?
That is another option as well. Since there is no way to perform a sensitivity study, we just have to make a guess as to what to use. The kanamycin has been reported to cause kidney damage in trout, but no other species that I know of (but many marine fish wouldn’t be tested).
