The theory:Hi all. So vodka dosing I'm fairly new to the hobby been running my 600l reef now for just short of a year.
Why do people dose with vodka what are the pros and cons?
Thanks
The theory:
Carbon is deficient in our tanks for bacteria to consume nitrate and phosphate.
The practice:
Increase carbon in the tank to create bacterial blooms that consume nitrate and phosphate. Then using a protien skimmer skim of said blooms exporting nitrate and phosphate.
Pros: Nitrate and phosphate reduction.
Cons: Aerobic bacteria are crowded out, creating a dependency on the carbon dosing.
This is the very simple answer but it should give you an idea of what is happening.

OK thank youThe theory:

LULOK thank you
The reason for asking my 1 year son put a handful of dog biscuits in the sump of witch I didn't notice till the morning and my phosphate then went right up 1.65

Carbon dosing of any kind takes weeks, maybe months to start reducing Phosphate and nitrates. If the tank was running well before this incident, meaning nutient levels were good, then I’d sooner do some bigger water changes.OK thank you

Thanks bud I will get on with a water change. And I think my patience is getting low with lolLUL
I would just do some water changes to dilute it out.
No need to move things quickly. Yes you will get some algal growth but this is part and parcel of owning a salt water tank. In time your tank will be able to absorb shocks like this and not have any impact at all.
Just like children our tanks need patience.![]()
