Hey everyone, maybe you can help me out here.

I am looking at possibly getting a volitan lionfish for the showpiece in my 125g. I am wondering what tank mates would work well with it though? All the threads I read are mostly about the dwarf kinds, which get substantially smaller, or the threads are 10+ years old. Much has changed in the hobby in 10 years. Some ideas that come to mind include larger angels or maybe larger wrasses, but I am not so sure. Suggestions do NOT have to be reef safe.

Just wanting to come up with some ideas before I reboot my 125g.

Tangs
Full size angels
Peaceful triggers - blue throat and cousins, but not the others, as they can chew on the lions fins.
Maybe large wrasses, as long as they are not juveniles.

That being said, a 125 will be really tight for an adult voliton lion. Think of basketball floating around.

I would push you toward smaller lions. If you don't like the dwarves (fuzzy or zebra), an antennata would be a good option.

A volitan will be an awesome showpiece for a 125g, they will get to 12 or more inches, but that will be several years down the line. They will eat anything they can get down so sizing appropriately is important. Of the larger angels a majestic would be ok a 125g, the other pomacanthus genus angels would get too large and aggressive. You could consider an angel from the Genicanthus or Apolemichthys genus. Rhinecanthus genus triggers grow slowly and would likely live well in a 125g, bluejaws also but so boring, no other trigger would be recommended for a 125g. A great wrasse for a lion tank is a harlequin tusk. Tangs for a 125g include the scopus, very underrated and prettier in person, but not as pretty as a purple, but much less aggressive. There's always a yellow or a brisletooth. A foxface or rabbitfish would also be a consideration.
