Vortech MP10 on 180g (glass thickness question)?

Is anyone using an MP10 on a 180g tank? MP10 specs appear to recommend a max glass thickness of 3/8" but it seems 180g tanks are generally made with 1/2" on the sides.

I don't think it will hold. 1/2" maybe, but 180's are usually thicker then that.

Aside from that, an mp10 would be pretty much worthless in a 180. I have one in my 75, for the money its really a joke. 40 or 60 for sure

This won't be the only powerhead, just using it to supplement flow in a specific area and smaller is less visually distracting. I actually used to have an MP40 in this spot but moved it because it was causing sandstorm issues and blowing corals over. I know I can always run an MP40 at a lower rate but seems like a waste when the MP10 is cheaper and smaller.

A small Tunze might be better - at least you can direct it if the application is to fill dead spots. Another side benefit is it will probably be a bit cheaper and work for more than 5 minutes

I've been looking at the new Tunze Stream but if you already have an MP-40 it's probably overkill.

Bump... really want to add another vortech or two to my tank but don't need the size or flow (or cost) of a MP40. Thinking about just trying it and seeing what happens...

MP 10 will maximum hold through 3/8 inch over that no. I have one with 3/8 inch thickness and its just stick through it.

Really you should try one before you buy one if you have not. I have a 10 and a few 40s in another tank. IMHO a 10 is good for a really small tank where small flow and adjustability are a must. Anything bigger tank wise, they are over priced for the amount of water they move. I think the quality is good but for moving water there are better options out there. I wouldn't have bought one after using it, but would have spent a little more for another 40. Big difference between the two for a little more money.

With 100 bucks more you can get the mp40.
Even 2 mp40 i dont think that is even enough for the 180g just so you know

Yep. I have 2 40s in my 90 and also another 1500 gph at the bottom. I could use another 1500. The vortech flow patterns are so narrow. All the way on is great but then you have to keep them out of direct blast of the corals.

I hear ya on the MP10... if it's too small/weak, then so be it.

Overall however, I've found that you can get away with a lot fewer powerheads if you are smart and careful about several aspects such as rock work and coral placement, power head placement, and the mode on which you run the pumps. A small pump, when allowed to run along a long uninterrupted length of the tank for longer than just a few seconds, will eventually get a lot of water moving. Think about dissolving sugar in a glass of tea, or chocolate syrup in milk. If you stir the spoon one time in one direction, and then one time in the other direction, and continue alternating after a single stir in any direction, the drink doesn't really get moving. But stir in the same direction for ten times and a row and each stir builds off the previous one and after just a few stirs the drink is swirling and will continue long after you stop stirring... weird analogy but that is how I set up flow in my tanks and I am able to get away with much fewer power heads than most people use.

I have successfully run mp10's on 1/2" glass. You need to make sure you secure the wire above the dryside so it helps support it on the glass. The magnet isn't strong enough to hold it on its own. I ran a pair of mp10s along with a pair of mp40s on my 180 for years with no issues.

I have been debating running 2 MP10 on the back wall of my 42"X24"X21" tank. I will run an MP40 to push water across the length of the tank. The idea was to leverage these pumps (which I own from a smaller tank) and see if a second MP40 is needed. I kind of like the idea of running them off the black back wall. YOu would not see them. The tank glass is 1/2" though so I would secure them properly. Thoughts?

I’ve run the MP10 on 1/2” glass (technically 12 mm). Torque transfers but you MUST make sure the dryside is well supported because the two sides will occasionally separate, particularly if you run the more aggressive ramping modes. Reef crest is mostly fine.

Agree with @ca1ore and @hybridazn ......I too ran an MP10 on half inch glass. As ca1ore pointed out, use the dry side adhesive support to assure the dry side doesn't slide.

You'll always have haters, in part, because they don't know the whole story. OP asked a simple question....Will an MP10 work on 1/2 inch glass?I

My story is that I have an MP10 on 1/2" glass in a five foot 90 gallon tank......along with four MP40's. And that's the rest of the story!
