I am on the cusp of setting up my 180(I am upgrading from a 55). One of my last concerns is flow in my new tank. I am pretty sure that the best way for main flow is to put two MP40w in my tank, one on each end of the 6' tank. One high in front and one low in back.
I am also wanting to have a random flow in the tank and I have been tossing around putting three MP10w along the back of the tank and making them have a random pattern... The dilema I am having is that I heard that I might be over doing it and you can have too many Vortechs....

My question is:

Will I be overdoing it? Will the MP10w's interfere with the MP40w's?

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks!!!
Cory

Yes as the mp10 wave movement will interfere with the mp40 completing their wave motion. 2 mp 40's positioned the way you have said should be more than plenty. Some people don't realize how much power comes out of these pumps.

I am one of those... :) I have only used the Hydor pumps until this build. Thanks for the info.

2 mp40's should be plenty IMO. When u say low in tank...how low assuming this is bare bottom? Those mp40's create a hell of an undertow is why I ask:)

As low as I can get before it blows sand all over the place!! lol I plan on having a shallow sand bed.

I'd say 2 MP40's should be good, if you find that lacking SOMEHOW, I would add a 3rd MP40. 2 on one side of the tank, the 3rd on the opposite, running them in one of the ES modes would get you a tremendous amount of movement.

Get the wireless versions and you can sync them or antisync them to randomize the flow. It's worth the extra $ to me.

Can you even use the MP10w on your tank? It is only good for aquariums with thickness of 3/8" or less.

This. I highly doubt an MP10 will work on a 180.
What type of corals are you planning? 2x MP40's may not be enough if you're going full-out SPS.

There will be no need to stagger the location of the 2 MP40s, just place them on the 2 sides facing each other at the same height. The spread of each MP40 is 2ft of depth by 3 ft of length. Try that and if you feel you need more for the back wall place a 3rd MP40 in the center of the tank

I am a LPS guy. So mostly LPS. I will have a SPS or two though. Not a heavy fish load but I want to get some cool Tangs.

THe 2 MP40

I agree with much of what has been said thus far. Two MP20 will be plenty, the wireless sync is the way to go. I had much the same questionw on my 150 and proposed the question to Vortech the anser I recieved back was a slight offset front to back from center tank, and a slight offset top to bottom center tank. Other advice make certain to get your glass thickness set up correct it will certainly make a difference in the noise. If they seem loud at first that will soon go away.

i've got all sps in my tank with some LPS as alveopora and gonopora or however you actually spell that..i have 3 mp40's cause the last one a friend gave to me for only 100 bucks and i could NOT say no to that...i am having more issues keeping sand on the ground now however and will probably take one down in time

I got a mp40 on my 60g and a korallia 1400. Got to say that mp40 is the bomb but I appreciate the extra flow from the korallia. If you go full blown sps you may need more flow down the road but 2x mp40, that should be great for lps and immature sps tank imo.

How adjustable are they? If I go bigger can I just dial them back? Thanks to everyone for all your information.
