I found a used Vortech Gen 2 MP40 for only 200... will this destroy my corals in my Biocube 29? It's softie and LPS dominated with some SPS, but I'm upgrading to a 120 hopefully.

Thanks!

You should be fine just turn it down to your desired flow all the way down to 500gph.

You will be OK. I have an MP10 and I can turn it up almost all the way in my BioCube29 without any ill effects (except the fish trying to keep up with the flow). The flow of the MP10 is reported at 200 to 1575 gph by VorTech, but other users have reported a flow above 1700.

I say go for it and pick up the MP40. Is it a gen1 or gen2?

"I just finished upgrading my equipments and have a couple of things to sell. Both items were in service up until 30 minutes ago.

Vortech MP40 with Gen 2 wetside - $200
Ranco temperature controller, single stage - $60

I just cleaned the Vortech wetside and the drive shaft has zero wear on it. Selling it because I bought a Tunze wavebox and my 75gallon tank now has a MP40w and a wavebox.
Selling the Ranco temperature controller because I just hooked-up the Aquacontroller."

Doesn't look like there is a wireless wave driver but it is fine. I know the guy pretty well too, so I'm sure he can help me out. This is great! I was wanting an mp10 for christmas.

Why did he say Gen 2 wetside? Could it be gen 1 and just an upgraded wetside?

There isn't much difference between the gen 1 and gen 2 besides the newer wet sides (which can be purchased through Echotech), the operating software (which can be flashed with a friends) and they have since did away with the color stickers on the controller and went with color leds. If you plan to buy used Vortech I would just make sure that it was cared for and no modifications where done to the cord or controller and no rust to the dry side assembly.

Thank you! Now the MP40 works on glass 3/16"-3/4" thick. Can anybody confirm that the Biocube 29 has 6mm thick glass? I read from other hobbyists this but can't find anywhere that oceanic stated it. 6mm = .236 inches, 3/16 inches = 1.875 inches so it doesn't look like I'll need a spacer.

OK, so I just got off the phone with him and he told me that it was an MP40, not an MP40w. So, you can't set it up with different modes like reef crest, just adjust the speed. When I upgrade, if I buy another Vortech MP40w with the wave driver, can it still work with the other and make it do all of the cool things? What disadvantages does this put me at?

I researched it before I purchased my MP10 for my Biocube, and you will are totally fine.

MP10
Maximum Tank Thickness: 3/8″

MP40
Aquarium Wall Thickness Range: 3/16”-3/4”

Do you have a sand bed in your tank? It will probably be blown around a lot with an MP40. I had an MP40 in my 45 gallon cube and it blew the sand out of one corner.

I think I have two of the older model (bought used) and one of the new ones (bought new) and I can sync them all together. I have them in reef crest. I just can't set my older ones to slow down at night. I guess it's a new feature.

Okay. Now I don't know if I should get it because it's not an MP40w. Is this a big deal?
