Depends on type. For coralline I would pop the guard off and soak in citric acid. For hair algae, turf, etc, tooth brush works fine.

You can buy powder off Amazon dirt cheap. If you want it right this second most big box hardware stores sell it in the concrete section.

Hot water for a few hours to loosen the calcification then citric acid bath / scrub.

I’ve seen it both ways in different sections. In the concrete section it’s usually powder as it’s used as a retarder.

Faster and in theory a little safer.
If it’s soft algae though all you need is a tooth brush or a tooth brush and a little hydrogen peroxide.

I wouldn’t put the magnet assembly in acid of any kind. Torque off the nozzle, soak it in vinegar. Give the rest a good mechanical cleaning.

MSDS/SDS even has LD50 marine invertebrate mortality rates. Apparently you should not dump more than 1.5g per gallon in your tank.

Haven't cleaned mine once in 3 years now.
