vortech mp40wes review

Mine are quiet enough. I don't think you've given them enough time to break in. The noise is related to te bearings on the dry side, I haven't done an upgrade yet, but seen some who have and they run completely silent after this IME.

I find mine at their noisiest in pulse mode....in all other modes they are acceptable....but not perfect.

Yep I was running pulse mode as I was looking for a wave. Tried some other modes and they are still noisy as they ramp up in speed. I agree though as ecotechs customer service has been extremely responsive.

I have been using the vortechs for awhile now and the only noisey one I evey had was one I bought used and probably wasnt well taken care of. All the new ones I have bought and used are supper quite. Its sounds like one that 90greefman had was an old one. (Correct me if im wrong)

These pumps are extreamly well made precision devices which do require regular maintenace to keep them running top notch. My good freind is running the MP60s and two MP40s on his tank for more than two years now and I never hear them when im at his place.

Bought one from rangerbobb locally, you know he takes care of his equipment so I do not feel that is the issue.

Yep Aaron is a good man and no doubt he took very good care of them. However I would be curious to know what the manufactures date was. Just because he took good care of it doesn't mean it wasn't one of the older units that did seem allot noisier than the ones being released now.

In the end I guess its just each to their own. Tunze pumps will work in some situations better than the Vortechs and visa versa for other situations. Sorry you didn't care your yours.

:)

I used to run tunzes on all my tanks but recently bought a mp40 for my 75g, pairs great with a nanostream 6025. Plus ecotech is headquartered 20 mins away from me so im not worried if it breaks down.

I'm sorry but this "study" is getting to the point of driving me crazy :)

Before I go on; I want to disclose that I currently have an MP10wES in my tank and will soon add one more. I've owned MP40s and a bunch of the Tunze pumps. They are both great.

That said, the above article was run(partly) by an Ecotech intern (employee? I forgot). Talk about a conflict of interest. Further, according to the study, only the larger Tunze pumps (6105, 6205, etc) did not "measure up" so to speak. Tunze has fixed the issue completely. New Tunze power heads are up to spec and come with a part that allows them to increase their GPH.

I've used a Tunze 6095 and it is very similar to an MP40. Not quite as much flow, but very close. I also wouldn't say that either are of poor quality. Tunze has a slight edge, but it's really not night and day. Customer service on both sides has been excellent.

This may be a dumb question but did you try calibrating it? That might help and maybe adding a second rubber spacer between the glass. Also is the magnet set to correct thickness? Just things to try. And agree with previously stated undertow being insane.

I have 3 Vortechs, an mp40w and 2 mp10wES. I have had service done to all but one of the mp10s, and on the other mp10 I just sent it off again today for the 2nd service in under 2 years. Given the price of these pumps I am absolutely steamed that they have to be serviced so often. I have pumps that are over 10 years and have never needed anything and still run like day 1.

I do however like the modes, as well as the flow and ability to communicate with each other. The undertow that brings the water back to the pump is just awesome.

In the end, the next time I have to send these in to get serviced will be the time I put them up for sale. So that should be in a couple months. Tunze here i come!

I love my mp40s. Never tried the others, koralia are just too big, I want to remove as much plastic as I can from sight in my dt.

To each his own I guess.....I have owned every pump in this hobby at one time or the other and I prefer the vortech's over any of them. I have the SAME mp10's that I got pre-order when they first came out 4 years ago. I sold my MP40's not long ago because I down graded my tank and even running at 50% in my 125 they were moving too much sand. Just like anything else in this world the better you take care of it the longer it will last....I doubt my 1988 toyota truck with 350,000 miles would still be running like a champ if I didn't change the oil every 5k miles.

Yes i did thank you. Spoke with all my local reefers who use them and tried as far as I know about everything.

So basically this is what I learned from this transaction.

1. Simply because an item is well marketed and costs a lot and it gets a lot of hype does not mean it is for you.
2. On a item this expensive do more research first and do not just jump in head first and buy it. Go to a lfs and check one out or a friend who has one to do the same.
3. Buyer beware on used items out of warranty. However my whole system is basically used equipment and the only things with an issue are the vortechs.
4. Basically this is my fault and I accept it, just grumpy pants because I spent $700 on something that doesn't meet my needs or expectations.

In closing ecotech is having me ship the pumps to them for a free diagnostics. Their customer service is top notch and professional so I am glad to see that.

I have 2 MP40ES and 1 MP10ES.
I bought them used.
How often do you clean the wet side?
I have to soak them every few weeks to remove the calcium buildup. Or they lock up and fall off. So I have a spare of each, gets kind of expensive.
Also, when cleaning them, Never mix and match/switch parts, they never fit/spin correctly. When you tightened the nut down, on MP40, the prop has to spin freely.
Anyone else have this problem? I have seen tanks with MPs that are fully encrusted. Do I turn down the calcuim reactor?

Otherwise, I like the small footprint inside my tanks, less cleaning. Great flow.
Have MP40s in rect 65gal and 40gal, MP10 in 25nano cube.

I had some Koralia 750s, I cleaned them, now they spin backwards? Why? Have do you make them blow the 'out'? I have 3 of them like that now.

Let me know how this goes for you - PM me or something.

I have been considering doing the same thing for the two mp40's I have in a $700 box next to the tank. One needs serious work, the other maybe only a new wet side or some parts...

Good luck!

I've owned all of them except the MP20. The MP10wES is great. Hardly any noise at all, unless ramped to full bore. The MP40wES has notable noise and is too much for my liking. Yes, they were positioned fine. I even had a friend come over and mess with them. He swore they were dead quiet at his house. I could hear them, though. When he adjusted mine, I could still hear them. We both decided that I was OCD with noise levels in my home, and called it done.

The MP60wES... ugh... Massive flow. Please understand what I'm saying here... MASSIVE FLOW. But, good grief... They looked like a subwoofers hanging on the side of my tank, and it was "awful loud!" I even had friends (that knew nothing about reefin') come over and ask me what my fish were listening to. (du-dunt-dunt!)

So, I sold them all off because others like them more than I do. To each their own. I will say that you cannot beat the control-ability, footprint, low profile, and undertow. However, you "can" beat the price and noise-level with almost any other powerhead.

Wanted to update my experience with this company and their "service" department. I have gone thru the service hassle with this company for the last time. Man what crappy service.

1st, I rec'd a call from them regarding my pump asking for a return call. I call back, and can't get anyone on the phone. So i leave a message. A couple hours later I call back, same thing. This was before they close mind you. I leave another message after they close. Next day, I call and have to leave another message. Entire day goes by, no return call. So I email them, and they tell me someone will call me the next day. Finally I get a phone call, turns out somehow water got onto the board in the controller. I still don't know how this could happen when nobody is at my house, and my tank still running normally except for the vortech pump. So fine, they do give me a way to get the board replaced cheaper than usual since the wireless module is fine. I guess thats a plus. He gives me my total and i give him my credit card info. Next day, the amount charged to my card is more than we talked about. Call back, leave a message no return call. Call again a few hours later leave a message no return call. Again I email them and they say to please call the next day. Next day I call and FINALLY i get someone to answer, it took 7 calls to get someone to answer over the course of 3 days. They say they will have someone call me back. A few hours later I get an email telling me that the extra fee is the shipping and they hope my reef is doing better now that I have my pump back. Well I don't have my pump back!!!! I reply to the email asking for the tracking number. No response. I call and begin leaving messages again. Today I emailed again asking for a tracking number and still cannot get a reply.

I am done with this company.

That really sux to hear man:( did u try the Lfs you bought it from? I didn't think you could go directly to ecotech? Good to know though...

I think you have to go thru Ecotech directly. At least I have had to the 3 times i've had my pumps serviced.

I will say the pump is working like new now and its nice to have it back. The people I dealt with at Ecotech are nice and friendly, plus I really like these pumps, but its so frustrating dealing with a company whose weak spot is communication with the customer. This is one of the easiest things for a company to control. I just don't understand it.

Glad u got it back and agreed on the customer service thing...dead trade in Florida that's for sure! When you call contractors for estimates its like they're doing you a huge favor and that's if they even call you back or show up for that matter! Lol
