I’m looking for a long term investment I have a 75 gal tank I’m looking to buy 1 powerheads what would be better 2 mp 10 or 40 I just read somewhere the mp10 is only good for a year give or take but with the money I’m spending I want to get the most bang for my buck

I have MP 10 in my 32 g. Have to keep them on a lower power because they are so strong. Same with my MP 40s in my 136 g.

It makes no sense that the MP 10s would be less well made.

They both are great. Doubt I’ll ever use anything else.

MP10, even a pair, is undersized for a four foot 75. I’d go with the single MP40, then maybe a second down the road. I’ve no idea what you read, but a well cared for vortech should last for many years, regardless of the model. The wetside will wear out faster than the rest of the pump, and require replacement, but 3-5 years is pretty typical. The dryside and controller should last a decade, maybe longer.

you heard MP10's only last a year or so? I have 2 MP10's that is over a year old and they work like they were brand new. I have heard people cleaning them with vinegar or citric acid may have issues down the road. I clean mine every 3-4 weeks with only a toothbrush and tap water.

for flow variations , I would rather choose 2 smaller power heads verus 1 stronger. But some may prefer the cleaner look of a single head or more powerful flow. Maybe go with 1 MP40 and 1 MP10's ? Gyres might be something you may want to research as well.

I think the thing you should consider is what glass thickness they are each rated to mount to. Will that be thick enough for your future upgrades?

I would say that depends on what you have in the tank. If regular fish and softies/LPS the 10s are more than enough.

Agree with @ca1ore 100%. I have 2 of the 1st or 2nd gen MP40's running on my tank now. I have upgraded to QD and upgraded the wetset side once. Couldn't be happier.

The ‘problem’ with the MP10 is narrow flow (it’s my least favorite of the vortechs). MP40 has much broader flow which helps even with softies. If FOWLR probably doesn’t matter I’d agree.

Earlier this year I finally replaced the last of my old style MP40 wetsides. Build date of Dec 2012. Pretty good. None of my QD models have yet required replacing.

I still have an MP-10 from 2013 that works great. I would do two MP-40's.

I would get an MP40 and save for a MP10 or 40 later down the road.
Coincidentally I have both a 40 and a 10 on a 40 breeder.

Well cared for and run at 100% constant flow. I do think stopping and starting wears things out. 9 years with all original parts.
