I recently had an MP10 dry side go bad so rather than buy a new one I wanted to move my others around. I have a 90G (48" long) with an MP40 on the right side and an MP 10 on the rear wall on the left (the other MP10 was on the back wall on the right).

whats everyone's opinion on the placement of the 40 and 10? it's a mixed reef heading toward SPS heavy.

Is it a bad bearing in the dry side?. They are relatively easy to replace.

Anyway, placement, in part, is how your rock-scape is set up. I also believe in loads of flow. So my first thought is to get that MP10 fixed and back in the tank. I also have a 90 gallon (give feet long) and have four MP40's and an MP10. A little later tonight I'll post a picture of placement.

Found it.....my Vortech placements:

it's a long story Red, I actually used your post to pull everything apart so thank you for that. I pulled the MP-10 apart and got the bearings off put the new ones on and then dropped the entire shaft on the concrete floor in the garage breaking the magnet in a few pieces. I glued the magnet back together with crazy glue as best I could and it surprisingly worked but it wasn't all that balanced. it wasn't my proudest moment.

That's a lot of flow you got there, i'm thinking with the 2 I have I'll just leave the 40 on the right side and drop the 10 down low so it pushes water behind the rocks and back to the overflow. My tank is light on live rock, I use mostly those marine pure bricks in the sump. so I think this setup will make a swirling motion in the tank.

Sorry about the MP.....that hurts!

......That's a lot of flow you got there.....

I'm not sure if you've ever seen HerbieK's tank in the South Brunswick area, but after seeing the 10 - 12 powerheads he runs, and his success in growing corals, and watching Dana Riddle's talk (HERE), I upped the number of powerheads to what you see above. With Dana's talk, it's more towards the end were he talks about the importance of flow.

@redfishbluefish
So how are you running all of those? Are they sync'd at all?
Do you run them at full blast?

I have the old style MP's. I run them un-sync'd in the yellow mode, which I think is called Reefcrest. The speed dial is about half way or a touch more.

I haven't seen Herbs tank since before sandy, he hooked me on SPS but yeah his flow is intense. I may end up getting another 40 or trying a Tunze pump or 2 to get the dead spots.

ChefJpaul, how do you like the Gyre? I heard they were a pain to clean.

I have one jebao pp20 (rated at max 5’000 gph) and it blows CC off the other side of the tank clean off the bottom 7 feet away with the pump facing the surface. How are you guys running so many large pumps?

the vortech flow is pretty wide, since my 10 went down I run my 40 at 100% and it moves water on the other side but not enough to move sand. I have it pretty high up though so the current shows at the water line.

I really like the different flow it produces along with the vortecs, adds another dimension. They work better together IMO, than just oneor the other.

They are a pain to take apart and clean, reason I have one, not three. I also now just take the whole thing and let it run in vinegar for a bit, only disassemble once a year or two.
